First Quarter - First quarter we will be building on and practicing basic map skills. We will be using, creating, and reading various maps for geographic information. We will begin with basic skills like latitude and longitude, parts of a map, geographic vocabulary, and map reading skills. Our first few weeks will be lots of note taking, vocabulary development, and practice. We will do a pre-assessment at the beginning of the year so we can see where our students are in their geographic knowledge and skill level. We will add big assessments and homework to the google calendar on our Stegosaurus learning community page. Thank you!
Sept.6-10 - We will refine and review some geography vocabulary. There are 19 words you can ask your students about - river, lake, island, archipelago, equator, mountain, valley, canyon, bay, strait, delta, latitude, longitude, desert, glacier, peninsula, plains, plateau, volcano -- We will also dive into using latitude and longitude to find exact location on a map....this will take LOTS of practice. Any additional practice you can do at home (play battleship, practice with an atlas, etc....) will be helpful!
Sept. 19-23 - WE will adjust our latitude and longitude to be set in groups, so students can expand their knowledge to being able to help their classmates and work together to find and cross-reference their answers. This will conclude with our final test on latitude and longitude, which will be Friday, 9/23.
Sept. 26 - October (all month) - We will be changing from "what geographers do" and moving toward "what historians do".....identifying how we make sense of the past, and how we find the truth by analyzing historical sources, both primary and secondary in order to come to an educated conclusion about what really happened. We will practice this in a variety of ways, but the main assessment will revolve around using the idea of PERSPECTIVE and BIAS and having students read stories to identify the perspective and bias, and then re-write stories from different perspectives. These make for fun creative stories....ask your child about them in the first couple weeks of October :-)
October 7 - Just wanted to share that Mr. Hartman has decided to resign from our school.....he came to share with the students and say goodbye, but his last day will be Friday, October 7. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Porambo if you have any specific questions.
*** November --- We are working on thinking and reading like a historian. We are reading about the Maya Civilization with the lens of "why are the Maya so REMARKABLE?" We will be analyzing historical documents and using evidence to answer a question about what accomplishment was the most remarkable from the Maya Civilization. We will do this over the span of a few weeks, and the FINAL DRAFT will be due on Friday, November 18. We will be using the CER (Claim/Evidence/Reasoning) rubric adopted by the entire school. You can find the rubric for the CER on our stegosaurus website ( www.stuartstegosaurus.weebly.com ) Here is a link to the Planning page you can see the students will be using to guide their writing
